The 40 year make-over

At the beginning of 2019, assuming I imported them around  1978, my Tannoys were 40 years old! With the Internet and various chat groups, I joined anything and all to do with Tannoy. I became conscious of the fact, even though they still sounded, as far as I was concerned, superb with a great “sound-stage”, I decided to investigate which parts of the speakers could be refurbished, which would maintain quality and perhaps even improve the reproduction.

The actual enclosures were impregnable! However, there were two achievable improvements:

1. replace the speaker cone surround

2. replace the crossover.

I was fortunate to discover that in my local city in Australia, there was, indeed, a person of considerable expertise able to replace the surrounds, and after some research, I also upgraded the crossovers choosing VS Clarity ESA Speaker Tannoy Crossovers from an excellent web resource site; “MainlyTannoy”.

Installing these meant that the “energy control” panel, which allowed one to modify the frequency response curve, had to be disconnected, so essentially, the speakers could not be adjusted. The company that installed them for me tested and supplied me with an appropriate response output graph.

Here is the graph of the frequency curve for each speaker with the new crossovers installed
